Key Differences Between Sand Casting and Die Casting

Both sand casting and die casting shape molten metal — but they serve very different applications. Choosing the right method depends on volume, precision, and part complexity.


Sand Casting:

  • Uses a disposable sand mold for each part

  • Suitable for low to medium volume production

  • Flexible for large or complex shapes

  • Typically rougher surface finish (Ra ~6–25 µm)

  • Looser tolerances (unless machined afterward)

  • Lower tooling cost, but slower cycle times


Die Casting:

  • Uses a permanent steel die that can produce thousands of parts

  • Ideal for high volume, consistent production

  • Produces fine detail and thinner walls

  • Smoother as-cast finish (Ra ~1–3 µm)

  • Tighter tolerances

  • Higher tooling cost, but faster cycle times
